Wars are often fought far away from the citizens who pay the ultimate price for them.
Behind official announcements and patriotic displays, the true cost of conflict is often hidden from the very families sending their children to the front lines. Now, a prominent international leader has broken that silence with an unusually stark warning, reports United24 Media.
A brutal reality
During a recent press conference in Kyiv, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made a direct and personal appeal to the youth of Russia. United24 Media reported that Rutte spoke alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to shine a light on the hidden human toll of the conflict.
The NATO chief accused Moscow of hiding the staggering scale of its military losses just to keep its recruitment lines moving. According to alliance data, Russia loses roughly 30,000 soldiers every single month on the battlefield. That shocking monthly number actually beats the total number of Soviet casualties during the entire ten-year war in Afghanistan.
Rutte did not hold back when describing the dangers facing new recruits. He warned that young people are routinely sent into combat with terrible training and poor equipment.
“You are being deceived. You are being sent to a war where you risk dying for the political ambitions of the Kremlin. Even if you are wounded, you will be left to die in the mud until you perish,” Rutte stated during the broadcast.
Straining the system
President Zelenskyy backed up those grim estimates with his own data. The Ukrainian leader explained that Russia loses between 30,000 and 35,000 personnel each month. Even though the Kremlin constantly replaces those fallen soldiers with new drafts, the heavy losses are putting an intense strain on the Russian military system.
Because of this high attrition, the momentum on the ground has shifted. Zelenskyy noted that Russian forces have struggled to hold the initiative since December, and the amount of land they can capture has shrunk.
The combination of high casualties and global sanctions could eventually force Moscow to talk. But to make that happen, Zelenskyy argued that the world must keep the pressure high. He also shared that Ukraine is now investing between $45 and $50 billion every year into making its own weapons to ensure it can stay in the fight.
