Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday that 21 hostages abducted by Hamas during the October 7, 2023, attacks are still alive, though the fate of three others remains uncertain. His statement follows recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, which sparked alarm in Israel by implying that three additional hostages held in Gaza may have died.

Israeli Authorities Grapple With Incomplete Information

In a video posted to X, Netanyahu said, “We are not certain about the status of three more hostages,” and reiterated Israel’s commitment to securing their release. As reported by Digi24, Israeli sources have confirmed that the bodies of at least 35 other hostages remain in the Gaza Strip, in the hands of Hamas or affiliated groups.

Before Trump’s statement, Israel’s official position held that 24 hostages were believed to be alive. Media reports now indicate growing concern within the Israeli government that the number of surviving captives may be even lower.

Sara Netanyahu, the prime minister’s wife, added to the tension earlier this week by suggesting the number of living hostages may already be fewer than assumed, reinforcing fears of deteriorating conditions for those still held in captivity.

Political Shockwaves Following Trump’s Comment

Trump’s statement on Tuesday—suggesting that three additional hostages may have died—was met with shock across the Israeli political landscape. Though no concrete evidence was presented, the remarks triggered a wave of criticism and concern, especially from families of the hostages and advocacy groups pressuring the Israeli government for more aggressive recovery efforts.

As of now, no updated intelligence has publicly confirmed Trump’s claim, but Israeli officials are urgently seeking clarity, both through military channels and diplomatic outreach.

The ongoing hostage crisis remains one of the most emotionally and politically charged aspects of the Gaza conflict, with pressure mounting on Netanyahu to secure results amid increasing public frustration and international scrutiny.
