The trade war between the US and Canada is reshaping the North American map – and not only in an economic sense.
Earlier this week, Donald Trump officially renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, stripping the lake of its 400-year-old name.
But now Ottawa is thinking about hitting back by renaming something else.
Trump Avenue
For twenty-five years, a quiet residential street in Ottawa carried the name Trump Avenue. Today, local leaders want it gone.
According to CBC News, cited by Newsweek, the idea is to rename the avenue after the city’s next election, and Ottawa Councillor Riley Brockington, who announced the plans, wants the residents to chime in with ideas for a new name.
Brockington called the current street sign an embarrassment for the nation’s capital.
“I think the time has come when you look at the damage and carnage that the president has caused, including with our own country,” Brockington said during a council debate. He added, “We’re past the point of debating.”
Taco on the table
Suggestions for a replacement have already started pouring in. Councillor Tim Tierney told CNN that one option on the table is “Taco Avenue.”
The shorthand references an acronym born online during recent tariff arguments, standing for “Trump Always Chickens Out.”
Other proposed replacement names include Pelosi Avenue, Obama Avenue, and even Rosie O’Donnell Avenue. Newsweek reported that the White House was contacted for comment on the proposals.
The street’s original moniker was part of a New York theme in the Central Park neighborhood. Neighbors also live on Staten Way and Manhattan Crescent. But local patience for the namesake has completely run out.
