US President Donald Trump also weighed in on the human toll of the conflict.

In a post on his social network Truth Social, Trump claimed that Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers in 2025 alone, with nearly 20,000 Russian troops dying in the past month.

“This is an unnecessary loss of human life,” Trump wrote, reiterating his stance that the war “should never have happened.”

Trump further stated that he is “trying to see if I can stop it,” hinting at his ongoing diplomatic efforts.

He revealed that since January 1, 2025, Ukraine has lost approximately 8,000 soldiers, not including those reported missing in action.

Trump also mentioned civilian casualties, though he noted the numbers were comparatively lower.

Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities continue to result in civilian deaths, albeit on a smaller scale.

Competing Claims on Battlefield Losses

The official numbers released by Ukraine’s General Staff are significantly higher than most Western intelligence assessments, which typically estimate Russian military casualties (killed and wounded) to be over 500,000.

However, precise casualty figures remain difficult to verify due to the fog of war and deliberate disinformation campaigns by both sides.
