What is happening?

A collective of Hungarian citizens has taken a bold stand against their government’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.

In an open letter addressed to the Ukrainian people, nearly 38.000 signatories have so far voiced their disapproval of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s policies.

Condemning Kremlin Aggression

The letter, published in both Hungarian and Ukrainian, sharply criticizes Russia’s military actions, labeling them as ongoing aggression since 2014.

It also denounces attempts to undermine Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and internal affairs.

Rejecting Orbán’s Anti-Ukraine Narrative

Citing the Hungarian government’s anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, the signatories express solidarity with Ukraine.

They pay tribute to the Ukrainian Armed Forces for their resilience and bravery in defending their nation.

Defending Ukraine’s Role Against Russian Expansion

The group believes Ukraine plays a crucial role in curbing what they describe as “Russian imperialist expansion.”

Offering Humanitarian Support

Beyond symbolic support, the activists also emphasize a commitment to providing humanitarian aid for war refugees, showing a practical dimension to their solidarity.

“Another Hungary” Speaks Out

Declaring, “There is another Hungary,” the letter insists the country’s soul isn’t defined by government policies.

The authors reject political opportunism and underscore the values of integrity and justice.

Orbán Fires Back

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Orbán slammed the signatories, accusing them of acting against Hungary’s national interests and misunderstanding the ramifications of continued war.

Fears of a Widening War

Orbán warned that Ukraine’s potential EU membership could increase the risk of a future European-Russian conflict.

He also argued that NATO membership for Ukraine might escalate tensions to the brink of a global war.

Hungary’s “Fundamental Security Interest”

For the Hungarian leader, avoiding integration with Ukraine is a matter of national security. He opposes any move that might entangle Hungary in a wider military or political conflict.

A Call for Peaceful Cooperation

Instead of pursuing EU or NATO integration for Ukraine, Orbán advocates for an alternative approach — one that focuses on pragmatic cooperation aimed at real assistance and long-term peace.
