Sudden tarmac delay
President Donald Trump prepared to fly to Texas on Wednesday. His travel plans hit a very visible snag. As he waited near the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews, a massive inflatable emergency slide suddenly deployed onto the runway.
Ground workers scrambled to detach the massive chute. Meanwhile, reporters watched the bizarre scene unfold from the tarmac. The Daily Express reported that officials eventually called in an older Air Force One aircraft to serve as a reliable backup.

Playing down the panic
Speaking to observers on the tarmac, Trump insisted the deployment was just part of standard maintenance.
“So they’re checking the slide over here. They were doing a check on the slide, you know?” Trump said.
When pressed on whether the incident involved a security breach, he firmly denied it. He offered a much simpler explanation.
“No, they were checking it before. And they just wanted to make sure. So they’ve, I guess they’ve already put it up. They want to make sure everything works perfectly,” he explained.
Echoes of past threats
The runway drama stirred up memories of a recent scare. Last month, things were much worse. The president faced severe safety threats following a NATO summit in Turkey.
According to a senior government official speaking to the New York Times, intelligence agencies had picked up assassination threats originating from Iran.
That situation required a highly unusual extraction method to keep the leader safe. Agents reportedly concealed him inside a specially modified airport catering cart attached to the belly of a plane.
He was then loaded onto a classified military flight. The Air Force C-32A carried him safely toward the UK, while the official presidential jet flew to a British military base completely empty.
