Speculation is rising over a possible new dimension of the war in Ukraine, centered beneath the surface of the Black Sea. Analysts warn that emerging technologies could reshape maritime security in the region.

Recent claims from Russian officials and experts suggest underwater drones may become a key factor in future operations.

New phase feared

According to Onet, Russian analyst Alexander Stepanov from the RANEPA Institute of Law and National Security said Ukraine could open what he described as an “underwater front.”

Speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, Stepanov linked this possibility to growing use of autonomous underwater systems, which he claims could pose risks to Russian naval assets and infrastructure.

His warning follows a statement by Russia’s Ministry of Defense, which reported in late March that its Black Sea Fleet had destroyed a Ukrainian underwater drone.

Hard to detect

Stepanov argued that such systems are difficult to identify due to their size and construction.

He said the materials used in these devices make detection more challenging, adding that similar technologies have already been tested during NATO exercises.

According to Onet, he suggested that deployment by Ukraine’s navy could significantly expand the scope of operations in the Black Sea.

Potential targets

The expert also outlined what he sees as possible future targets if such capabilities are expanded.

He pointed to critical infrastructure, including the TurkStream gas pipeline and other energy transit routes, as well as naval vessels.

Stepanov further claimed that the Black Sea could serve as a testing ground for these systems before broader use elsewhere.

Wider concerns

He also referenced incidents in the Caspian Sea, noting that although it is geographically enclosed, drone-related sabotage has already occurred there.

In his view, this could indicate the potential for underwater systems to be used in similar environments.

Onet also noted that Ukraine possesses underwater drone technology, including systems such as the “Marichka,” highlighting the growing role of unmanned platforms in the conflict.
