A longtime Santa actor who previously taught in a New Jersey elementary school is now facing several child-pornography counts.

According to CBS News, authorities say their investigation unfolded quickly after a digital-crime tip reached state officials.

Prosecutors in Mercer County announced that 64-year-old Mark Paulino was taken into custody following a search of his Hamilton Township home. The arrest has sent shockwaves through the community where he had worked for years.

Charges detailed

According to a statement released by Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta Marbrey’s office, Paulino is accused of distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material.

The charges include two second-degree offenses — distribution of CSAM and possession with intent to distribute — as well as third-degree possession and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities said Paulino retired recently from the Hamilton Township School District, where he had taught elementary students.

Prosecutors also referenced his publicly available website, which advertised his services as a Santa Claus performer for photo sessions and events.

Rapid investigation

According to the prosecutor’s office, the case began when the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Unit alerted local investigators to multiple online uploads allegedly linked to Paulino. Detectives moved swiftly, citing his history of working closely with minors.

“Due to his active engagement with young children in that role, detectives worked around the clock to obtain a search warrant,” the office wrote in its release.

Investigators executed that warrant last Friday, seizing digital devices and other materials before arresting Paulino at the residence.

Defense response

Speaking to CBS News Philadelphia, Paulino’s attorney Robin Kay Lord strongly rejected the allegations.

“My client has devoted years to portraying Santa Claus in local communities, spreading joy to children and families during the holiday season. He categorically denies the allegations made against him and maintains his complete innocence,” Lord said, adding that Paulino is entitled to the presumption of innocence and intends to contest all charges.

Prosecutors said Paulino could face five to 10 years in prison on the second-degree counts, along with fines reaching $150,000. A motion has been filed to hold him in custody while the case proceeds.
