The woman from Sydney was attacked by a large fish at the beach where she usually enjoys a morning swim.
Last June, an Australian woman swimming in the eastern Sydney sea encountered something out of the movie Jaws.
A huge fish attacked her, causing severe injuries and even the loss of a limb.
Luckily, she survived to tell her story and recalled the thoughts of resilience going through her head while fighting off her adversary in the ocean.
A horrific encounter
On June 13, 34-year-old teacher Leah Stewart went for a morning swim at Coogee Beach in eastern Sydney. What started as a routine morning ended in horror when a massive shark attacked her.
The shark inflicted severe injuries, forcing doctors to amputate her arm after she was kept in critical condition for over two weeks. Stewart recently shared details about her scary encounter with the shark for the very first time.
In her interview, Stewart explained that her thoughts instantly turned to her one-year-old daughter, August, while the creature held her. She refused to give up.
“It was holding onto my leg, then I just thought of August. I thought, ‘She’s not going to have a mum. She’s going to grow up without a mum,’” Stewart recalled. She added through tears that she “couldn’t handle that” and did not want her baby to grow up alone.
Light after darkness
Stewart described the shark’s appearance as terrifying, noting its “face was horrific” and stating she would “never forget its face … it was a monster.” Her determination carried her through weeks of intensive medical treatment.
Stewart shared that she has been “focused on my healing” and expressed deep gratitude for her progress. She said, “After what has been an incredibly difficult few months, I’m so happy that I’ve progressed enough to build some independence, and I can finally see some light after all of this.”
She credited her recovery to an “absolute army of love, support, prayers and encouragement” from people worldwide who donated to her GoFundMe. Feeling deeply blessed, she noted that she felt as though she had been “given a second chance at life.”
