In a heart-wrenching incident, a Polish mother is concluded to have killed her six-year-old child in June on a ferry from Gdynia in Poland to Karlskrona in Sweden.
This conclusion comes from a preliminary investigation of the case, as announced by the Swedish prosecution authority in a press release on Tuesday.
The Swedish investigation has been concluded since the suspect is deceased. The cause of death has been determined to be drowning.
"The investigation establishes that the child was killed. Surveillance video shows that the mother had the child in her arms when they fell overboard," said Deputy Chief Prosecutor Marie Lindström in a press release.
An ongoing investigation in Poland continues, as informed by the Swedish prosecutor, who noted that the results of the investigation have not been presented in court.
The Swedish investigation was based on video material, forensic examinations, and an interrogation of the captain. This material has been forwarded to Polish prosecutors.
The incident occurred on the ferry 'Stena Spirit,' owned by the shipping company Stena Lina. Initial reports of the incident on June 29 only mentioned that a mother and child had fallen overboard. It was later revealed that both were deceased.
