In a heart-wrenching event in Houston, a 1-year-old girl lost her life after being hit by an Uber driver, who had just dropped her and her family off at their apartment complex.

The driver, apparently failing to notice the toddler in front of his vehicle, struck her as he began to drive away, according Spectrum News.

Lieutenant K. Benoit of the sheriff's office described the incident as "an unfortunate tragedy," emphasizing the suddenness and unforeseen nature of the accident.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez detailed that the driver believed the way was clear to proceed. However, as he moved forward, he collided with the girl, dragging her a short distance. Surveillance footage captured the moment, showing the girl walking alone in front of the car just before the tragic accident.

The aftermath of the incident saw the girl's family members pulling the driver from his vehicle and assaulting him.

"It’s just an unfortunate tragedy at this point," Lt. Benoit remarked, highlighting the devastating impact of the event on all involved.

Sheriff Gonzalez stressed the importance of vigilance when it comes to the safety of children.

"We as parents, relatives, custodians of children, we have to just be a lot more alert, hold their hands, guide them to a safe place and then watch the driver pull away," he advised, pointing out the critical need for adults to ensure the safety of children in such situations.

The driver was subsequently taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of now, no charges have been filed, but the case remains under active investigation by authorities.
