The first weekend of May 2025 is in the bag, but while a lot of us had a couple of days off, the world hasn’t had a break. In fact, a lot of significant and important events have happened during the last couple of days, so here’s a couple of highlights to keep you up to date.
The Pope-race is on

Pope Francis have been laid to rest, and the big question is who’s going to be his successor. There are three main contenders, but during the weekend, Donald Trump send ripples through the Catholic world.

He posted and AI-generated picture of himself dressed as pope. The picture was posted after he jokingly said that he would like to be Pope. He has earlier said, he would like the Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan, to be the next Pope.

Catholics all over the world are in chok and distress over the image, resulting in a massive backlash against Trump. There have also been criticism from the Catholic Curch in America, although not as harsh as from countries like Italy.
Putin talking nukes

In an interview on Russian State television, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, said that Russia has the strength and ressources to bring the war in Ukraine to a “logical end”, not defining what that means. He also said that he hoped it wouldn’t be “necessary” to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

The interview marks the 25th year of Putin in power, and asked who the 72 year old President would like to see as his successor, he said that it will be up to the Russian people to decide.

He beat the conservative candidate, Peter Dutton, whom Albanese continuously has compared to Donald Trump because of similarities in Duttons and Trumps political priorities.
Trump-supporter in the lead in Romanian Election

Rightwing candidate for the Romanian Election, George Simion, got 40.6 % of the votes in the first round of the election for the Romanian Presidency. He supports Trump and has criticised the current Romanian Government for not fighting for Romanians instead of supporting Ukraine.

The election actually took place in 2024, but the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to declare the election null and void due to suspected Russian interference. Simion will face the Mayor of Bukarest, Nicusor Dan, in the second round of the Presidential Election.
