President Donald Trump’s recent declaration that the Epstein files are a “hoax” and a fabrication by Democrats has triggered a wave of backlash from his own supporters.
The president’s claims also caught the attention of tech mogul Elon Musk, who shared his opinion on his social media platform X shortly afterward.
Musk Fires Back
In a series of rapid-fire posts on X, Musk openly mocked Trump’s theory, highlighting what he called a glaring contradiction.
“Wow, amazing that Epstein ‘killed himself’ and Ghislaine is in federal prison for a hoax,” Musk wrote, calling attention to the ongoing imprisonment of Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking minors for Epstein’s benefit.
Minutes later, Musk posted again:
“Not a single Epstein client has been prosecuted. Not even one.”
Trump vs. His Base
Trump’s comments came after mounting frustration from supporters over his administration’s failure to release the Epstein files, despite making it a key talking point during his campaign.
Instead of fulfilling the promise, Trump has dismissed the entire scandal as a partisan invention, writing on Truth Social:
“Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bullshit,’ hook, line, and sinker.”
Calling Out Supporters
He went further, calling those who questioned him “weaklings”, and distancing himself from anyone who continues to discuss Epstein.
“Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats’ work. Don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support anymore!”
Adding to the controversy, Trump accused Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and James Comey of fabricating the files during a press appearance at the White House before leaving for an event in Pennsylvania.
A Viral Fallout
Musk, whose relationship with Trump has soured in recent months, posted about Epstein 13 times in just over an hour on Wednesday, according to The Daily Beast.
All posts included either direct criticism of Trump or support for those challenging his narrative.
In one reply to another user, Musk wrote: “So many powerful people want that list suppressed.”
Once nicknamed “The First Buddy” by Trump, Musk broke with the president earlier this year when he claimed Trump was “in the Epstein files”
He later deleted the post and apologized for.
Supporters Question Trump’s Motives
Across X and other platforms, Trump’s once-loyal base has begun to fracture.
Many users accused him of betraying one of his most central promises, while others speculated about why he would suddenly reverse his stance on a subject he once weaponized.

Another asked bluntly: “Why are you protecting pedophiles?”

Senator Elizabeth Warren responded to the news by reposting Colbert’s viral monologue criticizing Paramount’s $16 million settlement payment to Trump, suggesting political favoritism.
Meanwhile, Representative Adam Schiff noted that Trump’s words and actions regarding Epstein warrant scrutiny, especially in light of recent attacks on those who once held him accountable.
