Trump took aim at Judge Ana Reyes after she slammed his lawyers for misleading the court, shouting that they had “lost all credibility.”
The controversy began when the Trump administration started to illegally cut down 430 trees at the East Potomac Golf Links, a century-old public golf course on National Park Service land, two weekends ago.
At that time, it was not fully known why the administration would remove so many trees, but then Trump revealed on Truth Social over the weekend that he was renovating the public golf course so it would be up to his standards.
That made a Washington, D.C., judge irate because she had ruled earlier this year that the federal government must give notice before any substantive construction work on the golf course could move forward.
Because of the judge’s ruling, Trump saw red, and early this morning, he took to his social media platform to direct his anger at the judge with some very harsh accusations against her.
Trump questions if the judge ‘may be insane?’
In the post, Trump wrote: “The United States Department of Interior wants to take a terrible and very unsafe golf course, and make it into a great, safe, and prestigious golf course. They have an absolute right to do so. It’s as simple as that! The judge on the case is a crazed lunatic whose courthouse tapes will reveal, may be insane? The tapes have been blocked from usage by the judge.”
Trump went further in his conspiracy theories about U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes.
“They do not need an approval. Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY! The finished product will be World Class, and bring income and great prestige back to D.C.,” Trump concluded in his post.
Reyes fought back against Trump’s lawyers
This all stems from last week, when Judge Reyes found out that the government was not being truthful about what it was doing to the public golf course.
“I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done,” the judge shouted at the lawyers, according to Politico, before adding, “What has happened has cost the government all credibility with me in this case. You’ve lost credibility!”
Then a blistering encounter ensued between Judge Ana Reyes and Trump’s lawyers.
According to Washington Sun reporter Reese Gorman, the attorneys did not even try to hide that they had misled the court.
Judge Reyes asked them, “On [sic] what universe did anyone in your office think this was acceptable?” – referring to cutting down the trees without proper warning.
The government lawyers then answered, “Your Honor, we did our best,” to which Judge Reyes snapped back, “No, you did not do your best. You did your absolute worst!”
