US President Donald Trump has drawn parallels between protests in Iran and what he says could have unfolded in the United States. Speaking in Detroit, he argued that his election victory prevented similar instability at home.

His comments came as demonstrations continue in Iran and Washington weighs its next steps.

Comments in Detroit

Trump made brief remarks on Iran during a speech in Detroit that focused mainly on the US economy. According to The Times of Israel, the White House had said in advance that Iran would be mentioned only briefly.

Addressing the Detroit Economic Club, Trump spoke directly to Iranians protesting against their government. “One death, and that’s too many, but I hear much lower numbers, then I hear much higher numbers,” he said.

He urged demonstrators to document those involved in the crackdown. “Remember the names of the murderers and abusers who abuse you. You are being abused very badly, if the numbers are correct,” he said.

Warnings and promises

Trump repeated messages previously posted on Truth Social, telling Iranian “patriots” to “take control of their institutions.” He added that those responsible for violence “will pay a very high price.”

While insisting that “help is on the way,” Trump did not explain what form that support would take. He referenced existing tariffs on countries doing business with Iran and said he had cancelled meetings with Iranian officials.

‘I said, make Iran great again. You know, Iran was a great country before these monsters came to power,’ he told the audience, reports Digi24.ro

US comparison

Trump also suggested the US itself had been close to similar unrest. “Everything is very fragile, we would have suffered too, I tell you, if I hadn’t won this election,” he said.

The president did not provide evidence for the claim, but framed it as a warning about political instability.

Economic focus

Much of the speech was devoted to domestic achievements. Trump said “economic growth is explosive, productivity is rising, investment is booming, incomes are rising” and claimed that “inflation has been defeated,” echoing earlier social media posts highlighted by the BBC.

He praised his tariff policies, saying they had brought “hundreds of billions of dollars” into the US, while criticising legal challenges now before the Supreme Court.

Next steps

After the speech, Trump was due to return to the White House for a meeting with his national security team to discuss possible measures against Iran, a White House official told reporters.

Earlier, Trump had also suggested it would be a “good idea” for Americans to leave Iran, without giving further details.
