Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on actor George Clooney after news emerged that Clooney and his wife, Amal, have received French citizenship.

The US president used the announcement to criticize both the couple and France’s immigration policies.

The comments were made on Trump’s Truth Social account and were reported by AFP.

Citizenship sparks criticism

“Good news! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political analysts of all time, have officially become French citizens,” Trump wrote.

He went on to accuse France of suffering from rising crime due to what he called “absolutely disastrous management of immigration.”

Trump compared France’s situation to the United States under his Democratic predecessor. “Similar to what we had under Joe Biden, the sleepyhead,” he added.

AFP noted that Trump did not cite official statistics but has regularly drawn a direct link between immigration and crime.

Attacks on Clooney

The Republican president also targeted Clooney personally.

According to Trump, the Hollywood star “became better known through politics than through his rare, totally mediocre films.” He added that Clooney “wasn’t a movie star at all, just an ordinary guy who constantly complained about the lack of common sense in politics.”

Clooney has long been a public supporter of Democratic causes and candidates, which has previously drawn criticism from Trump.

Amal Clooney’s role

Trump also referred indirectly to Amal Clooney’s work as a lawyer and human rights activist. AFP reported that she was part of a panel of experts advising the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

That prosecutor later sought arrest warrants against two Israeli ministers, including Benjamin Netanyahu, and three Hamas leaders.

The move angered Israel and the United States, which is Israel’s main military and diplomatic ally.

Reaction in France

In France, the Clooneys’ naturalization also prompted debate, though for different reasons.

According to AFP, controversy focused on the administrative process involved, with one minister criticizing the granting of citizenship as involving “two measures” at a time when France is tightening access to nationality.
