Speaking to guests in the White House Rose Garden, US President Donald Trump brought up the relentless gossip surrounding his distinctive hairstyle. Photos of windswept moments on airport tarmacs have fueled speculation for years.
According to the Irish Star, the 80-year-old president made a sudden off-script remark to address the claims directly.
“Actually, for years, I had to suffer with people saying, ‘He wears a wig.’ I don’t wear a wig,” Trump told the audience.
The denial follows a Long Island police event in August, where he brushed off rumors by touting “good” hair products “that can puff up your hair a little bit more, so it makes you look like you have 4% more hair than you had.”
Political hair battles
His locks have also become a target for political rivals. Last month, the Democratic Party joined the online debate by sharing media on X to highlight alleged changes in his hair.
Posting a video of Trump with fuller locks alongside a photo showing thinner hair, the Democrats wrote, “This was Trump’s hair less than 3 months ago.”
Despite his firm denial, online observers quickly voiced skepticism across social media. Many argued that his statement relied on clever semantics.
One X user wrote, “Okay, okay. It’s a hairpiece NOT a wig. But newsflash: that’s a distinction without a difference.” Another called him “Toupee trump.”
Comparing presidential denials
Other commentators drew parallels to famous historical moments when past leaders issued dramatic public denials.
Referencing President Richard Nixon, one user wrote, “This is Trump’s ‘I am not a crook!'” A separate commenter invoked President Bill Clinton, adding, “Reminds me of ‘I didn’t have sex with that woman’ and we know the truth.”
Critics also mocked his choice of words. Reacting to his claim of hardship, one user wrote, “He had to suffer? yeah, you don’t know what that word means…”
