President Donald Trump has finally responded to New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, after the 34-year-old’s fiery victory speech took direct aim at the White House.
During his election night celebration in Brooklyn, Mamdani declared, “New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”
Then, addressing Trump directly, he said: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
The jab quickly made headlines, and on Wednesday night, Trump responded in an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, calling Mamdani’s remarks “angry” and “very dangerous.”
“He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington,” Trump said. “Because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding.”

Trump also reiterated past threats to limit federal funding to New York City should Mamdani continue what he called a “radical” agenda. Trump has previously called Mamdani a communist, though the new mayor identifies as a democratic socialist.
Trump unleashes on Newsom too
In a separate appearance at the America Business Forum in Miami, Trump also revived his long-running feud with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, debuting a new nickname:
“Maybe that should be his nickname — Slimy. Slimy Newscum, right?” Trump said, prompting laughs from the crowd.
Newsom swiftly fired back on X, writing: “You lost.”
While Mamdani has yet to respond to Trump’s remarks, his victory and bold tone have already reshaped the political landscape heading into 2026. Political analysts say tensions between City Hall and the White House may escalate further as both men continue to use one another as political foils.
