Andrew and Tristan Tate face serious prison sentences in both the UK and Romania. A judge in Miami made sure they have no chance of fleeing.
Two manosphere influencers are currently in jail cells in a Miami prison facing possible imprisonment in the United Kingdom.
The brothers and their legal team are fighting for the chance to post bail and avoid extradition to the UK.
But the prosecution in the UK just got a massive breakthrough in the case.
No bail possible for the Tate brothers
As Dagens.com reported yesterday, a judge in Miami denied bail for the controversial influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, who are facing rape, assault, and human trafficking charges in the United Kingdom.
The brothers hold dual citizenship in both the US and the UK.
According to the BBC, the British Embassy in the US had asked the judge assigned to the case to not let the Tate brothers out on bail as they are a “flight risk” and there would be a high chance of the Tates intimidating witnesses.
UK prosecution gets its wish
Judge Lauren Louis agreed with that assessment. In her ruling, Louis noted that “while [the brothers] may not in fact possess what extravagant holdings they portray themselves as possessing online, the record reflects that they possess an exceptional capacity to flee the jurisdiction.”
On the other side, the Tate brothers’ defense team argued that they had already complied with the prosecutors’ instructions and they do not pose a flight risk.
They are also arguing that their living conditions in their jail cells should grant them bail. Tristan Tate told CBS News that his jail cell is inhumane and that he had lost 14 pounds.
“It’s beginning to grate on me because I can’t partake in helping with my defence,” he said.
The Romanian government is also seeking extradition
It is not only in the UK that the brothers are in big trouble. Romania has also indicted the brothers for trafficking and sex crimes.
The brothers have lived there since 2017, and the Romanian prosecutors allege in their indictments that the brothers recruited young women for their pornographic webcam business in which they subsequently sexually exploited them.
The prosecution in Romania also claims that some of these were just girls, some as young as 15 years old.
The Tate brothers got famous for promoting a lifestyle to young men that many have considered toxic and misogynistic in the manosphere. It is within those online communities that Andrew and Tristan Tate promoted anti-feminist and often misogynistic views about gender, relationships, and society all while promising a get-rich-quick scheme.
The brothers have since argued they just played a character and it was all a ruse. Meanwhile, neither the Romanian nor UK government seems to think their alleged crimes were merely theatrical.
