Britain could be waking up to a blanket of snow next week as new forecasts warn of a potential blizzard sweeping across more than 60 counties.

Meteorologists say Arctic air could collide with moist Atlantic fronts, triggering heavy snowfall in several regions.

WX Charts data indicates that up to 25cm of snow may fall in the hardest-hit areas within the next ten days — a sharp shift from the recent spell of mild and wet weather.

Arctic blast incoming

Forecast models suggest that from Wednesday, November 19, freezing air will surge southward from the Arctic, pulling temperatures down sharply across the UK.

The Met Office has not yet issued any snow warnings, but it has cautioned that temperatures could start to drop this week, particularly in parts of Scotland where the first icy conditions are already appearing.

The Independent cites Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge:

“There is the possibility of snow by the end of next week and into next weekend. There are lots of different computer models, and they all run multiple times a day, but some of them are coming up with some cold air coming in from the north that might result in some snow across most likely Scotland.”

Early snowfall expected

WX Charts predicts the first flakes will begin falling over northern Scotland on Monday, November 17, around 10 a.m.

The Highlands could be among the worst affected, with up to 25cm expected in some places.

From there, the cold front is forecast to move quickly south, spreading wintry showers over much of Scotland, northern England, the Midlands and North Wales through the following hours.

By Wednesday, the snow is expected to reach much of southern England.

Forecast maps show the South Coast and even London may see a dusting, though accumulation levels are likely to vary.

The system could mark the UK’s first widespread snowfall of the season, signalling a sharp transition from autumn’s unsettled weather to winter’s first major cold snap.
