A Ukrainian military operation has reportedly inflicted heavy losses on a Russian unit tied to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Officials say the strike marks one of the most significant setbacks for the group since the war began.

According to United24Media, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) said the operation targeted the “Akhmat” unit, part of Russia’s Rosgvardia forces, resulting in its largest reported personnel losses since 2022.

The strike involved coordination between multiple Ukrainian units, including special forces and territorial defence fighters.

Coordinated attack

HUR stated that the operation was carried out by the “Shamanbat” special unit, working alongside the 104th Territorial Defense Brigade “Horyn” and supported by intelligence operatives.

“HUR special forces have crushed Kadyrov’s fighters. The ‘Akhmat’ unit has suffered its heaviest losses since 2022,” the agency said.

The report highlights the use of combined tactics, including drone strikes and artillery fire.

Reported losses

According to United24Media, Ukrainian officials said at least 40 Russian fighters were killed and more than 80 wounded in the assault.

Military vehicles, including transport and armoured equipment, were also destroyed during the operation.

HUR described the strike as the most severe single loss for the unit since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Unit background

The “Akhmat” formation is linked to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and has been deployed in Ukraine since the early stages of the conflict, according to open-source reporting cited by United24Media.

The unit operates under Russia’s National Guard (Rosgvardia) and has been involved in various combat operations.

Continuing operations

Ukrainian intelligence said footage of the operation is expected to be released, providing further details of the strike.

The reported attack follows previous operations targeting similar units, including coordinated drone and artillery strikes on advancing forces.

The developments reflect ongoing efforts by Ukraine to weaken key Russian formations through targeted operations.
