What is happening?

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has announced fresh military support for Ukraine.

Speaking at a key summit in London, Pistorius outlined new initiatives to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Long-Range Drones Funded by Berlin

One of the most notable developments is Germany’s decision to finance the acquisition of long-range drones built in Ukraine.

These drones will be capable of striking Russian aircraft, missiles, and other threats before they can be deployed.

Designed for Preemptive Strikes

Pistorius explained that the German-funded drones are designed to take out Russian threats on the ground—before they can reach Ukrainian cities or damage critical infrastructure.

The goal is to proactively neutralize incoming attacks.

Immediate Delivery to Ukrainian Forces

According to Pistorius, the first batch of drones funded by Germany will be handed over to Ukrainian troops within days.

These systems are combat-ready and can be deployed as soon as they arrive.

Meeting of Global Defence Leaders in London

The announcement came during the 29th session of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, a gathering of international defence ministers dedicated to coordinating support for Kyiv.

Ukraine’s Urgent Need for Patriot Systems

Alongside drone support, Pistorius emphasized Ukraine’s desperate need for additional air defence systems.

Specifically, he said Ukraine requires at least five more American-made Patriot missile systems to shield itself from sustained Russian air attacks.

Germany Steps Up With Patriot Commitment

In response to this need, Germany has pledged to deliver two Patriot systems to Ukraine.

These high-performance anti-missile units are considered crucial for intercepting Russian projectiles and defending urban areas.

A Strategic Shift in Delivery Plans

Originally, Berlin intended to purchase two Patriots from the United States—each costing roughly €1 billion—and ship them directly to Kyiv.

Reallocating From Its Own Arsenal

Instead of waiting, Germany will send two of its own operational Patriot systems to Ukraine.

Once new units are received from the US, they will replenish the German military’s inventory.
