Politico, an American political journalism organization, has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the most influential "dreamer" in Europe.
This recognition comes as part of Politico's list of people who are expected to have the most impact on the course of events in 2024.
Zelensky has been commended for his efforts to promote Ukraine’s cause on the international stage, particularly in advocating for Ukraine's membership in the European Union and bringing the country closer to the NATO military alliance.
These achievements were highlighted as pushing boundaries and making progress in areas that were previously deemed unlikely.
A challenging year for Zelensky
However, Politico predicts a challenging year ahead for Zelensky in 2024.
The ongoing war in Ukraine, which has stretched over two years, has left Ukrainians exhausted and continues to pose a significant threat, especially with the relentless aggression from Russia.
As the conflict persists, Zelensky’s approach towards the West has evolved from seeking assistance to a more assertive stance, although this shift has not always been as effective as his earlier appeals.
Additionally, Politico points out the potential for elections in Ukraine in 2024. For these elections to take place, changes to the Ukrainian Constitution would be required.
