Diplomatic efforts surrounding the war in Ukraine are once again in focus, with new claims about behind-the-scenes negotiations involving Washington, Moscow and Kyiv.
Russian officials say discussions are ongoing, though key disagreements remain unresolved.
Talks behind the scenes
According to TASS, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said the United States is attempting to persuade Ukraine to accept compromise proposals put forward during earlier discussions.
Speaking at a conference in Uzbekistan, Galuzin pointed to prior talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, which he said laid the groundwork for current negotiations.
He indicated that Moscow had agreed to the ideas discussed at that meeting, describing them as addressing the root causes of the conflict and the realities on the ground.
Pressure on Kyiv
Galuzin said Washington is now working to gain Ukraine’s approval for those proposals, suggesting the next step depends on Kyiv’s response.
He added that the US is actively engaging Ukrainian authorities in an effort to move the process forward.
However, the Russian diplomat also highlighted a key sticking point, noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out withdrawing troops from the Donbass region.
Stalemate remains
According to Galuzin, this position differs from what Russia considers to be earlier understandings reached during talks involving US leadership.
The disagreement underscores ongoing divisions between the parties, with no clear indication of a breakthrough.
