US Senator Jim Risch has condemned Russia after a drone reportedly crashed into a residential building in Romania, calling the violation of Romanian airspace unacceptable.
The chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has strongly criticised Russia after a drone reportedly crashed into a residential building in Romania’s Galați region.
The incident has renewed concerns about Russian military activity near NATO territory and calls for stronger deterrence measures.
Strong condemnation
According to Digi24, Senator Jim Risch described the incident as an unacceptable violation of Romanian airspace.
“Russia’s reckless violation of Romanian airspace and disregard for civilians is unacceptable,” Risch wrote in a post on X.
The Republican senator from Idaho serves as chairman of the influential US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
He also reaffirmed Washington’s support for Romania and other NATO allies.
NATO commitment
“The US stands with Romania and our NATO allies against this provocative behavior,” Risch stated.
“We must bolster our deterrence and make clear that we will not give up one square inch of NATO.”
The comments followed reports that a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galați.
Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has repeatedly reported incidents involving drones and debris linked to the war.
Influential committee
According to Digi24, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has played a major role in shaping US foreign policy since its creation in 1816.
The committee oversees diplomatic appointments, reviews international treaties and examines key foreign policy legislation.
Throughout its history, it has influenced major decisions ranging from the Treaty of Versailles to the Marshall Plan and the creation of the United Nations.
It remains one of the most powerful committees in the US Senate on international affairs.
Growing tensions
The drone incident comes amid continued concerns about Russian military operations near NATO borders.
Western officials have repeatedly warned that accidental or deliberate violations of alliance airspace risk escalating tensions between Russia and NATO members.
Romania has strengthened surveillance and air defence measures in response to repeated incidents linked to the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.
