Doctors say many patients arrive too late with serious conditions because early warning signs were overlooked or dismissed as minor issues.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, survival rates for certain cancers can be as high as 95% when detected early, but drop sharply to around 15% once the disease has spread.
Experts say this gap is often linked to how easily early symptoms are ignored or misinterpreted, particularly when they resemble harmless conditions.
One example drawing concern is a rare cancer that develops under the nail, which many people mistake for bruising or everyday damage.
Easily misread signs
Rather than presenting as a typical skin abnormality, this condition often appears as a dark mark beneath the nail, making it harder to identify as dangerous.
Medical specialists explain that the issue is not just the appearance itself, but how easily it blends in with common nail injuries, leading to delays in seeking care.
Because of this, changes may go unchecked as they gradually worsen, increasing the risk of the disease spreading beyond the initial site.
Expert warning
Podiatrists at Belmont Anderson & Associates stress that subtle physical changes should not be ignored, as they can reflect deeper health problems.
“If you notice dark discolouration that is often painful, you should be alarmed,” the clinic says. “This is a sign of melanoma, which is a very serious form of skin cancer. You should schedule an appointment with your physician right away.”
Specialists add that this form of melanoma is not strongly linked to sun exposure and can develop on any nail, making it less predictable than other types.
When to act
Doctors advise seeking medical attention if a nail shows unexplained discoloration, changes in shape, or begins separating from the nail bed.
Other concerning signs include persistent damage, irregular pigmentation, or swelling around the nail.
Experts emphasize that identifying unusual changes early remains one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes and prevent the condition from advancing.
