In a grand gesture celebrating her global influence and philanthropic work, a giant statue of the world-renowned pop singer Shakira has been unveiled in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia.

Standing at an impressive 6.5 meters tall, the bronze and aluminum sculpture captures the singer in a characteristic pose, complete with a flowing skirt and a bare midriff, reminiscent of her iconic dance moves in the 'Hips Don't Lie' music video.

World Star Attends Unveiling

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, was present at the inauguration of the statue along with her parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll. The event, which coincided with her mother's birthday, was also attended by Barranquilla's mayor. The unveiling was a momentous occasion, with Shakira taking to Instagram to share her feelings, noting the event was overwhelming for her "little heart."

Sculpture Symbolizing Shakira's Legacy

Created by sculptor Yino Márquez and his students, the statue not only celebrates Shakira's artistic achievements but also honors her contributions through her 'Pies Descalzos' (Barefoot) foundation, established in 1997 to aid impoverished children.

A plaque at the statue's base reads, "A woman who composes, hips that don't lie, unparalleled talent, a voice that moves masses and bare feet that march for childhood and humanity." It symbolically associates the sculpture's elements, like the aluminum skirt and folded hands, with natural and spiritual motifs.

Shakira's Recent Headlines

The Colombian singer has recently been in the news for multiple reasons. In July 2022, she faced accusations of tax evasion, allegedly avoiding paying €14.5 million (approximately 108 million kroner) between 2012 and 2014. The case concluded with Shakira agreeing to a settlement of around €7.3 million (54 million kroner).

In January, Shakira released 'Out of Your League,' a song seemingly directed at her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, which broke YouTube records by garnering over 63 million views in 24 hours.
