In a recent online conversation with participants of Sweden's annual national conference "Society and Defence," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined two principal challenges the world faces in its efforts to counter Russian aggression: battling Russian disinformation and preventing Russia from evading sanctions.
As reported by the President's office, Zelenskyy stressed the critical role of global information policy in the current geopolitical landscape. He highlighted Russia's significant control over the information space, not just in Ukraine but globally, including in Europe, the United States, Britain, Africa, and Latin America. According to Zelenskyy, Russia heavily invests in various media outlets within other countries and social networks to spread its propaganda.
The President expressed concern that the independent media in these countries often unknowingly amplify Russian narratives, presenting them as reality rather than a skewed perspective. He emphasized the need for professional vigilance, from intelligence agencies to independent journalists, to combat this disinformation and "clean it up."
The second major challenge Zelenskyy identified is Russia's evasion of international sanctions. He pointed out that missiles used against Ukraine contain components from various countries, indicating that Russia is successfully circumventing the sanctions. This, he noted, is facilitated by manufacturing and intermediary companies operating globally, including in Europe and the United States. Zelenskyy urged international bodies involved in sanction policies to pay closer attention to these activities.
These comments from President Zelenskyy highlight the ongoing global effort needed to effectively counter Russian aggression. The focus on information warfare and sanction evasion points to the multifaceted nature of the current geopolitical conflict and the need for a coordinated international response.
