Investigators uncovered a digital trail.
Professional athletes often enjoy immense wealth and public adoration.
Behind closed doors, however, a very different reality can sometimes unfold. One former football standout now sits in a jail cell facing the ultimate penalty.
A tragic discovery
Authorities have officially charged former NFL linebacker Darron Lee with first-degree murder.
The severe indictment comes months after police discovered the lifeless body of his girlfriend inside a home in Tennessee.
A grand jury handed down the decision on Tuesday. They chose to drop a lesser evidence tampering charge to focus entirely on the homicide accusation, according to a report from ESPN cited by People.
The victim was 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo. She sustained a dozen different injuries, including bone fractures and stab wounds. A medical examiner confirmed she died from multiple blunt force trauma in February, ABC 9 reported.
Digital footprints
Police arrested the former football player on February 6. Investigators soon uncovered a bizarre digital trail.
Lee allegedly turned to artificial intelligence for advice immediately following the fatal incident.
He reportedly asked ChatGPT how to secure medical assistance without drawing the attention of law enforcement.
The digital inquiry included highly specific and disturbing details. He used the platform to ask if a fall could cause bruised eyes and “two stabby looking wounds”, ABC 9 noted.
The athlete currently sits in a Hamilton County jail cell without bond. He is scheduled to face a judge on June 17.
A history of violence
The former professional athlete is no stranger to the justice system. He was actually serving probation for several violent offenses across two different states when the fatal attack occurred.
Just last year, police arrested him for allegedly assaulting his mother, his previous girlfriend, and a toddler. He also attacked a man in Florida, The Bleacher Report noted.
During his time in the NFL, Lee played for the New York Jets, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Buffalo Bills.
Those days in packed stadiums are now a distant memory. Prosecutors will soon discuss whether to seek a life sentence or the death penalty for his latest alleged crimes.
