The renowned Brazilian football star Dani Alves is facing a possible nine-year prison sentence as the public prosecutor pursues charges of rape against him, AP writes.

This development follows his arrest and subsequent detention since January.

The incident in question reportedly occurred last December in a nightclub in Barcelona. Alves, a former FC Barcelona player, is accused of sexually assaulting a young woman at the Sutton nightclub.

In addition to the proposed prison term, the prosecution is seeking a compensation of 150,000 euros for the alleged victim.

The 40-year-old footballer, who has been in custody since the start of the year, insists that any sexual encounter with the woman was consensual. Initially, Alves denied all allegations but later admitted to lying to avoid confessing infidelity to his wife.

The charge and subsequent legal proceedings represent a dramatic turn for Alves, known for his illustrious career with FC Barcelona. During his tenure at the club, from 2008 to 2016 and then again from November 2021 to July 2022, he accumulated over 400 appearances and numerous titles.

The case continues to develop, with the Spanish justice system closely examining the details of the incident and the allegations against Alves.
