Alimov and Ogloblin Set to Compete in International Tournaments Starting August
Two Russian badminton players have been granted permission to return to international competition as neutral athletes, marking a significant development in the sport. Rodion Alimov and Maksim Ogloblin have received approval from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments beginning August 11.
The decision was made after a review panel concluded that both players adhered to the ethical guidelines intended to promote peace and solidarity, which are prerequisites for Russian athletes seeking neutral status.
Road to Redemption Begins Without Ranking Points
Alimov, a 27-year-old former European champion in mixed doubles, was ranked as high as 18 in the world alongside partner Alina Davletova before the suspension of Russian athletes in 2022. Ogloblin, 21, is a rising talent who has primarily competed at the junior level.

First Russian Entrants Since the 2022 Suspension
This marks the first time since early 2022 that Russian players will participate in BWF competitions. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee recommended excluding athletes from Russia and Belarus across all international sports.
Although the BWF opened the door for neutral athlete participation in February 2024, no players had begun the application process until now. Alimov and Ogloblin are the first to be approved under these new conditions and will be subject to all BWF and WADA anti-doping regulations going forward.
