Private ChatGPT Messages Found Through Google Search

Others are reading now

We’ve all gotten used to talking to digital assistants. Whether it’s asking for advice, help with a work project, or just venting about a tough day, tools like ChatGPT have started to feel personal.

But what if the things you typed into that chat box weren’t just between you and the AI?

What if anyone could find your most personal thoughts and questions with a simple Google search?

That’s exactly what happened to thousands of users, writes El Economista.

The “Share” Button

Nearly 100,000 ChatGPT conversations have been exposed online. These chats include everything from love letters and business ideas to contract drafts and emotional confessions.

People used the tool like a personal diary or assistant. But it turns out those conversations weren’t as private as users thought.

The issue began with ChatGPT’s “share” button. This feature let users send a link to someone else so they could read the conversation.

The problem? These links could be picked up by Google and added to search results. Anyone could find them. That’s how the leak happened.

Some users unknowingly shared links with private information. Once those links were indexed by Google, researchers and others found and downloaded the chats. Now, they’re out there.

May Be Too Late

OpenAI has removed the share feature. Their security chief said they acted fast to stop more leaks.

They’ve also asked search engines to delete the indexed links. But it may be too late. Copies have already been downloaded. There’s no way to get them all back.

The leaked chats show how much trust people put in AI. They also show how easy it is to lose control of private data. Many users didn’t realize a simple share button could mean global exposure.

This incident is a reminder. Don’t assume your online chats are private, even with tools that seem secure.

Always check what features really do before sharing anything personal.

When it comes to AI, it’s better to be careful than regretful.
