Elon Musk’s Starlink system is now live for mobile phones, bringing satellite connectivity directly to select devices. Starting July 15, users in remote areas can send messages and share locations—even without cell towers or cables.

Starlink Goes Live for Mobiles

SpaceX’s Starlink has begun offering direct-to-device connectivity in partnership with T-Mobile. The system aims to bridge the gap in rural regions by enabling basic messaging and location sharing via satellite.

No Extra Hardware Required

Unlike previous satellite phones, users don’t need an external antenna or add-on device. As long as your smartphone is on the approved list, it can connect directly to the Starlink satellite network.

iPhone Users: Only Recent Models Qualify

Currently, only Apple’s iPhone 14, 15, and 16 are eligible for Starlink connectivity. Earlier generations are not supported under the new system.

Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy Supported

The Pixel 9 and newer are eligible. Samsung users can connect via Galaxy A14/A15, S21 to S25, Z Flip 3, and Z Fold 3 and later. Support spans across mid-range and flagship models.

Motorola Phones Join the List

Motorola’s Razr 2024, Razr Plus 2024, Moto Edge, and Moto G Power 5G (2024) are also included. More devices are expected to be added over time as compatibility expands.

Fast, Low-Orbit Performance

Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites—about 550 km above ground—enable quicker data transfers than traditional satellite systems. That means faster messaging and more reliable emergency backup.

Free Messaging During Beta

For now, users can send and receive texts and share locations at no cost while the service is in beta. This makes Starlink a promising fallback for outages or natural disasters.

Outdoor Use Only, For Now

Despite the excitement, there are limits. Starlink connectivity currently requires clear skies—no dense buildings or forest cover—meaning urban use is still restricted. More features are expected to roll out in future updates.
