If you’ve ever tried texting on your iPhone while juggling coffee, groceries, or your dog’s leash, you know the struggle: these phones are big, and our hands… aren’t.
But there’s a simple built-in trick that makes one-handed typing far easier and chances are, you’ve never used it.
Hidden in Plain Sight
Since iOS 11, Apple has offered a hidden feature that lets you shift the keyboard to either the right or left side of the screen.
It’s perfect for quick messages or on-the-go typing without having to risk dropping your phone.

Here’s how to try it:
- Open any app where you can type (like Messages, Notes, or Mail).
- On the keyboard, press and hold the globe or emoji icon.
- A small menu will pop up showing three keyboard icons.
- Tap the one that shifts the keyboard to the right or left, depending on which hand you’re using.
That’s it. The keys shrink slightly and move to one side, making them easier to reach with one thumb.
While this feature has been around for years, tech experts say it’s one of the most underused iPhone tools.
“The one-handed function is a practical helper – especially when using larger iPhones,” writes the editor at Mobil.nu.
The keyboard automatically returns to normal after a while or once you switch apps, so you don’t need to worry about constantly adjusting it.
Next time you’re texting while walking, try the one-handed keyboard. Your thumb will thank you.
