Nvidia scales back massive OpenAI deal amid fears of an AI “money merry-go-round”

Nvidia has finalized a $105 billion guarantee for OpenAI’s new Ohio data center, slashing the deal by $145 billion amid Wall Street fears over circular financing and artificial chip demand.

Nvidia has officially committed to a massive $105 billion financial guarantee for OpenAI’s planned data center campus in Ohio. While that number is staggering, it is actually $145 billion lower than the $250 billion the chip giant was reportedly considering just a month ago. According to a recent Fortune report, this drastic reduction highlights a growing anxiety on Wall Street regarding the sustainability of the artificial intelligence boom.

The AI money merry-go-round

At the heart of investor anxiety is a concept known as “circular financing.” Currently, Nvidia is the dominant maker of the advanced computer chips required to train AI models. However, the company is increasingly helping to finance the very data centers that buy its own chips. By stepping in to guarantee the value of OpenAI’s new Ohio infrastructure, Nvidia is essentially funding the demand for its own hardware. When rumors of the original $250 billion guarantee surfaced in July, Nvidia’s stock took a noticeable hit as investors worried this self-funding cycle was creating artificial demand rather than organic growth.

To mitigate these risks, the finalized $105 billion deal drastically reduces Nvidia’s financial exposure. The funding is designed to help SoftBank-backed developer SB Energy secure outside financing by backing up lease payments in case OpenAI defaults.

Building the physical backbone of AI

Despite the reduced financial guarantee, the Ohio project remains a colossal undertaking that will shape the future of consumer AI tools. OpenAI plans to lease the campus for up to 20 years, utilizing Nvidia as its exclusive chip provider for the initial phase. The facility is being built on a former United States Department of Energy site and is expected to eventually reach an unprecedented 8 gigawatts of computing capacity.

For everyday tech users, these massive infrastructure investments dictate the speed, capability, and cost of the AI services integrated into smartphones and software. While tech giants continue to weave a complex web of mutual investments and hardware purchases, the true test will be whether these multi-billion-dollar data centers can generate enough real-world subscription revenue to keep the AI engine running without inflating consumer costs.
