US firm drops clean-sheet engineering for combat-proven Israeli suicide drones

Utah-based Palladyne AI has secured an exclusive partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries to manufacture and market combat-proven loitering munitions in the United States.

Defending a nation against modern aerial threats requires constant vigilance and massive hardware supplies. For generations, military planners focused on building heavy artillery and standard aircraft to control the skies. Now, a fresh industrial alliance is shifting production lines onto American soil to deploy an entirely different kind of automated weapon.

Domestic drone manufacturing

A prominent American technology firm is expanding domestic production of advanced military gear. Instead of spending years developing new hardware from scratch, the company is teaming up with an international partner to bring proven designs into local factories.

According to a report by Airforce Technology, Utah-based Palladyne AI has formed a strategic partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries. The agreement grants the American firm exclusive rights to manufacture and market three specific types of loitering munition systems.

These weapons are commonly known as kamikaze or suicide drones. The project will adapt the unmanned systems to meet the specific technical requirements of the U.S. Department of War.

The arrangement comes as western defense agencies boost investments in cost-effective aerial weapons. The Pentagon wants to bypass long development delays to build a robust stockpile of automated systems capable of operating in highly contested zones.

Speeding up deployment

The agreement specifically covers the HARPY, HAROP, and Mini HARPY drone platforms. These systems have spent decades flying real-world missions for various international militaries, which makes them highly attractive to planners looking for immediate battlefield solutions.

The strategy allows the American company to produce components locally while receiving engineering support from the original designers. This domestic setup satisfies the immediate demand for homegrown security tools.

“The U.S. defense industrial base needs battle-proven loitering munitions capabilities it can field now,” explained Ben Wolff, the president of Palladyne AI, as reported by Business Wire.

“This new strategic partnership will bring our combat-proven long-range loitering munitions to the U.S. market,” noted Guy Barlev, an executive vice president at Israel Aerospace Industries, via Business Wire.

Hunting enemy radars

These autonomous drones cruise over hostile territory for extended periods, independently searching for active air defense networks and missile launchers. The systems track and destroy radar infrastructure to clear paths for friendly aircraft.

As reported by The Jerusalem Post, the smaller tactical variants combine standard cameras with advanced anti-radiation seekers to locate and neutralize enemy electronic emitters. This dual-sensor approach helps front-line units take out counter-drone arrays and secure air superiority.
