In Denmark, a volunteer project that has been assisting Ukrainians with temporary protection by providing them with free used bicycles is at risk of shutting down due to a lack of funds.

The initiative, known as "Giv en cykel," was reported by the Danish news outlet DR.

The "Giv en cykel" project serves as a mediator between Danes willing to donate working but unneeded bicycles and Ukrainians seeking transportation. The program aims to help Ukrainians, displaced by the war, integrate into the local lifestyle, which includes frequent bicycle use.

The process requires Danish donors to fill out a questionnaire detailing their bicycles, while Ukrainians interested in receiving a bicycle complete a separate questionnaire indicating their preferences.

Volunteers then strive to find the best matches and facilitate contact between donors and recipients to arrange the delivery of the bicycles.

Through this initiative, Danes have donated over 3,000 bicycles to Ukrainians.

But the initiative now faces potential closure due to funding shortages.

Although the volunteer brokers offer their services for free, the project requires funds for minor repairs and for equipping each bicycle with essential accessories such as locks, reflectors, and lights.

The head of Cyklistforbundet, the organization overseeing the project, noted that there are several hundred Ukrainians still on the waiting list, alongside many Danes eager to donate. There is hope that companies will step in to provide the financial support needed to continue this impactful project.
