Deadly Bug Strikes German Coast

More people are heading to the water this summer. Beaches are filling up across Germany.

But warm sea temperatures can bring more than just sunshine. They can also bring dangerous bacteria, reports Tag24.

The Bacteria Lives in Salt Water

A 68-year-old man in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has died after being infected with vibrio bacteria.

This was the first reported case of the bathing season, according to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs.

How the man became infected is not clear. He had several chronic illnesses. He was treated in hospital but did not survive.

Vibrio bacteria live in salt water. They grow faster when the sea is warm. The bacteria have now been found in coastal water for the first time this summer. Officials are warning that more cases could appear.

Two Fatal Cases Last Year

Last year, there were five recorded infections in the same region. Two of those cases were fatal.

Not everyone needs to worry. Healthy people are usually not at risk. But the bacteria can be very dangerous for older adults.

The same goes for people with long-term health problems or weak immune systems.

If these people go swimming with open cuts or wounds, they can become infected. The state office recommends that high-risk people avoid contact with sea or brackish water, especially if they have any skin injuries.

Infections can lead to serious illness very quickly. Symptoms often start with redness or swelling around a wound.

Fever and chills can follow. If left untreated, the infection can spread through the bloodstream.

Authorities say beachgoers should pay attention to warnings. If the water is warm and you have a health condition, it may be better to stay dry. The sea might look inviting, but it can carry hidden risks.

The agency continues to monitor water temperatures and bacteria levels. If there are new infections, they will report them.

In the meantime, they ask people to be cautious and act early if they notice signs of illness after swimming.
