On December 4, 2023, a man in custody at the Maîche gendarmerie in Doubs, France, managed to escape after being allowed to leave his cell to sign some documents.

According to Midlibre.fr, the handcuffs were removed for this purpose, and seizing the moment, the man fled.

He quickly jumped into a nearby Chronopost delivery van, which was parked with its doors open and engine running, and drove away.

This initiated a chase involving 50 gendarmes.

The pursuit ended in Pont-de-Roide, about twenty kilometers from the brigade, after the van's tires were punctured and it crashed into several cars.

The man then fled on foot and was found hiding in a bush after about 3 and a half hours. The reasons for his initial custody, however, remain unknown, and the Montbéliard prosecutor's office is handling the investigation
