Guests attending the St. Petersburg Economic Forum are facing a highly unusual requirement
High-profile business summits usually focus on trade deals, global investments, and networking over coffee.
But behind the scenes of major international gatherings, the host country often sets unexpected rules that everyone must follow.
For one upcoming global event, the price of admission requires a bit of medical scrutiny.
A strict entry
Guests attending the St. Petersburg Economic Forum are facing a highly unusual requirement this week. To get anywhere near the main action, visitors must first agree to a thorough medical screening.
This is definitely no ordinary temperature check at the door.
According to a report by Business Insider, organizers are demanding full PCR tests from every single participant before they can roam the venue.
These intensive laboratory swabs are designed to scan for coronavirus, standard influenza, and a wide variety of other respiratory illnesses.
There is a massive catch. Attendees cannot just show a quick clearance note from their own personal doctors or local clinics. Instead, everyone must use the official on-site labs.
The golden ticket
A negative test result is the only thing that activates an official entry pass. Without it, visitors are completely locked out.
The strict health checks are tied directly to Vladimir Putin’s highly anticipated speech on Friday. Business insider reported that for this major presentation, the Russian leader is sharing the stage with a select group of foreign VIPs.
Chinese Vice President Han Zheng will join him for the high-profile panel. Tanzanian President Samia Hassan Suluhu and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev are also flying in to join the discussion. Other forum events are entirely exempt.
An isolated leader
These intense precautions fit into a well-known historical pattern for the Kremlin. Throughout the pandemic, the Russian chief famously isolated himself from the public and his own staff.
In those days, visitors had to spend weeks in strict quarantine before securing a meeting. They also faced endless tests.
Even though the global health emergency has long since faded, the Russian leader has kept his strict rules firmly in place. For the global elite, a clean swab is the ultimate security clearance.
