Shot Dead on Saturday
Former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in the city of Lviv on Saturday, writes the Guardian. He was 54.
His death was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called it a horrific crime and a matter of national security.
Suspect Arrested
Police say a suspect has been arrested. According to Zelensky, the man has already given an initial testimony.
Investigators are now working quickly to piece together all the details of the case.
A Central Figure
Parubiy was not only a former speaker of parliament. He had also been a central figure in the 2013–2014 protests in Kyiv, when Ukrainians took to the streets to demand closer ties with the European Union.
Those demonstrations, often remembered as the Maidan movement, reshaped Ukraine’s political future.
From April 2016 until August 2019, he served as speaker, making him one of the most visible political leaders of that period.
“Carefully Planned”
Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, confirmed that the alleged shooter was detained overnight in the Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine.
He described the crime as carefully planned. The killer had studied Parubiy’s movements. A route had been mapped out. Even an escape plan was prepared.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials say that many details cannot be shared yet. The investigation is still active, and authorities want to make sure nothing jeopardizes their work.
Zelensky thanked law enforcement for their fast and coordinated response, stressing that every detail of the murder must be uncovered.
To many Ukrainians, the death of a man who once stood at the front of their country’s democratic movement feels especially painful.
Parubiy’s role in shaping Ukraine’s modern path has certainly left a mark.
