A teenager was attacked by a crocodile while fishing.
A 14-year-old boy is in stable condition after surviving a crocodile attack while fishing in waist-deep water at Myall Beach, near Cape Tribulation, Queensland, on Saturday, October 25.
The incident occurred around 3:50 p.m., according to reports from ABC News, Sky News Australia, and The Guardian.
The boy had been fishing with two others when he was suddenly attacked, sustaining serious injuries to his torso and leg.
Emergency services were called immediately.
In the meantime, local staff and visitors at PKs Jungle Village, an accommodation near the beach, rushed to help.
According to Harry Hartley, manager of PKs, people “came out of the rainforest to help” the injured teen.
Witnesses carried the boy from the beach along a boardwalk that links directly to PKs’ beachfront property.
There, nurses and staff provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
A spokesperson from PKs confirmed that the boy’s 14-year-old friend, who was in the water with him during the incident, also received care at the lodge.
The boy was later airlifted to Cairns Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, according to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service.
Crocodile sighting
While no crocodile was immediately found after the incident, the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) confirmed that the boy’s injuries were consistent with a crocodile bite.
Officials are continuing to monitor the area.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is leading the investigation.
So far in October, at least four crocodiles have been reported in the Cape Tribulation area, including one sighting just days earlier.
“This young boy was very lucky,” said PKs staff. “The beach is very close to our property, which helped us respond quickly.”
