A sudden change in wind direction turned a routine containment effort into a deadly disaster for Turkish firefighters battling a blaze in the city of Eskisehir.

Tragedy in Eskisehir

Ten firefighters have died and 14 others are being treated for injuries after being caught in a fast-moving wildfire in Turkey’s central province of Eskisehir, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The wildfire broke out in the Seyitgazi district and intensified overnight, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Caught by the Flames

According to Turkey’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli, 24 firefighters were suddenly surrounded by flames when the wind shifted direction, pushing the fire directly toward their location on Tuesday.

“They were fighting the flames on top of a hill, while we were fighting at the bottom,” firefighter Ercan Temel told the Ihlas news agency.
He added that the group attempted to escape uphill but were ultimately overtaken by the fire.
Emergency Response Underway

All 24 firefighters were quickly evacuated and taken to nearby hospitals.
However, 10 could not be saved, and 14 remain hospitalized as of Wednesday.
According to local news reports, the severity of their conditions has not yet been disclosed to the public.

Minister Yumakli stated that seven wildfires remain active across five provinces in central and western Turkey, including in Eskisehir.
Firefighting crews and emergency personnel are continuing to battle the blazes amid difficult terrain and unpredictable wind conditions.
