Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old publicist and pole dancer from Brazil, was trapped for four days inside the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on Indonesia’s Lombok island.

As reported by Newsner, Marins fell from a cliff near Cemara Nunggal while hiking toward the peak of Mount Rinjani on Saturday, June 21.

She was hiking with a group and a guide when the accident occurred.

According to her family, she had asked to take a break, but the group allegedly continued without her. When the guide returned, Juliana was missing. It’s believed she became disoriented after being left behind.

“She didn’t know what to do. When the guide came back because she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there,” said her sister, Marianna Marins.

Massive Rescue Operation

Authorities temporarily closed all hiking trails in Rinjani National Park to prioritize the rescue mission.

Juliana had fallen more than 500 meters (approximately 1,640 feet) into the crater and became trapped on a rocky cliff deep inside the volcano.

The rescue effort involved six teams and two helicopters. Three days into the ordeal, Juliana’s condition remained uncertain.

According to the BBC, rescuers reported hearing cries for help coming from within the crater—offering a chilling but hopeful sign that she might still be alive.

However, on Tuesday, Juliana’s family confirmed the heartbreaking news: she had not survived.

“Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.
With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.
We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection, and support that we have received,” the family wrote in a statement on social media.

Final Confirmation

Prior to the family’s announcement, Gunung Rinjani National Park posted an update on Facebook stating that Juliana had been successfully located using drone surveillance.

She was seen “motionless” on a cliff approximately 500 meters deep inside the crater.

Rescue personnel made attempts to reach her but encountered extreme technical challenges. The park explained:

“Two rescue personnel were deployed to reach the victim’s location and check the second anchor point at a depth of 350 meters (1,140 ft). However, after observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to install the anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim.”

Ultimately, worsening weather conditions and dangerous terrain forced authorities to abandon the recovery effort.
