Modern warfare looks less like old history books and more like science fiction.
Technology now dominates the skies, watching every move below. And sometimes, a buzzing machine can offer unexpected salvation instead of total destruction.
A frantic call
This dramatic incident unfolded during April on the North Slobozhanshchyna front. Two infantrymen fell into enemy hands during a particularly heavy firefight, prompting their commanders to scramble for immediate help.
According to Ukrainska Pravda, the 21st Separate Mechanised Brigade received the urgent alert. A drone team was sitting just a few miles away.
“During a Russian assault on a neighbouring brigade’s positions, two of our infantrymen were captured and the command requested assistance,” the brigade reported.
The unit explained that the soldiers wasted no time getting their equipment ready. They launched a heavy attack hexacopter, built by the SkyFall company, straight into the danger zone.
Death from above
Russian forces were already marching their new prisoners back to their own lines. Then, they heard a terrifying noise right over their heads.
The Ukrainian aircraft, known as a Vampire, causes massive fear among enemy ranks. Russian troops actually call the heavy bomber “Baba Yaga” after a famous witch from local folklore.
“When they heard the distinctive sound of the Vampire hovering above them, the Russians panicked, abandoned the prisoners and attempted to flee,” the military stated.
The panic did not save the captors. Ukrainska Pravda notes that the drone crew launched precision strikes, killing two Russian soldiers on the spot.
Walking back home
The sudden chaos gave the captive infantrymen a perfect window for escape. Both men successfully navigated back to friendly lines and finally rejoined their original units.
This dramatic rescue marks a major military milestone. The 21st Brigade stressed this is the first confirmed case of an airborne drone freeing prisoners on this specific frontline.
Commanders publicly praised the four operators who handled the tense mission. “Thank you to Rubin, Balta, Balu and Diadia Kolia for their determination and skilful work!” the brigade announced.
The mechanical hero of the day also received high praise. The unit noted the locally made combat machine can spread total panic simply by showing up.
