New intelligence concerns surrounding Cuba are emerging as tensions between Washington, Moscow, and Tehran continue to grow.

According to the Kyiv Independent, citing Axios, U.S. officials believe Havana is strengthening military cooperation with Russia while also studying Iranian defense tactics.

Strategic location

Cuba’s proximity to the United States has long made the island strategically important during periods of geopolitical tension.

American officials told Axios they are closely monitoring reports of Cuban interest in Russian drones and other military systems.

The claims have not been independently verified publicly.

Still, U.S. intelligence sources reportedly believe Cuba has already obtained hundreds of Russian- and Iranian-made drones.

Regional worries

Officials familiar with the matter said the drones are being stored at several locations across the country.

According to Axios, some Cuban officials have also discussed possible scenarios involving Guantanamo Bay, Key West, and U.S. naval assets.

The reported developments have added to broader U.S. concerns over Russian and Iranian influence in the Caribbean region.

American officials also allege that Cuba continues hosting intelligence-gathering facilities linked to both China and Russia.

Diplomatic pressure

Washington has reportedly warned Havana against allowing the island to become a platform for foreign adversaries.

U.S. officials said CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently delivered that message during discussions related to Cuba.

“Director Ratcliffe made clear that Cuba can no longer serve as a platform for adversaries to advance hostile agendas in our hemisphere,” a CIA official told Axios.

The report also said Cuban officials are attempting to understand how Iran has managed to withstand years of U.S. military and economic pressure.

Ukraine lessons

U.S. intelligence assessments suggest Cuba has gained additional military experience through Russia’s war in Ukraine.

American officials estimate that thousands of Cuban nationals have fought alongside Russian forces since the start of the full-scale invasion.

“They’re part of the (Russian President Vladimir) Putin meat grinder. They’re learning about Iranian tactics. It’s something we have to plan for,” a senior U.S. official said.

Ukraine downgraded diplomatic ties with Havana last year over allegations tied to Cuban recruitment efforts supporting Russia’s military.

Limited threat

Despite the intelligence concerns, U.S. officials reportedly do not consider Cuba capable of posing a major conventional military challenge.

One official told Axios it remains unclear whether the country still operates functional fighter aircraft.

However, officials stressed that Cuba’s location roughly 90 miles from Florida keeps the issue politically and strategically sensitive.

Axios also reported that U.S. prosecutors may soon unseal an indictment involving former Cuban leader Raul Castro.
