Nearly 8 years after her marriage into the Royal Family, Markle still receives critique.
Fresh criticism is once again following Meghan Markle across both Hollywood and royal circles, as debate over her continued use of royal branding refuses to disappear.
Several commentators and royal insiders have now accused the Duchess of Sussex of profiting from her connection to the monarchy while remaining far removed from royal life itself.
Royal titles back under scrutiny
Discussion surrounding Meghan intensified after reports emerged earlier this year about a gift basket allegedly sent to a podcast host.
According to reports received by Express, the package included a note signed using “HRH, Duchess of Sussex” — a detail that quickly reignited criticism surrounding Meghan’s public identity and branding.
Former working royals Meghan and Prince Harry stepped back from official duties in 2020 before relocating to California, where they have since built media projects, commercial partnerships and entertainment ventures.
Still, royal ties continue to follow nearly every public appearance involving the couple.
Critics accuse Meghan of cashing in
Sky News presenter Samara Gill became one of the latest voices to openly criticize Meghan’s approach to royal titles and branding.
“She’s obsessed with the Royal Family, and she’s obsessed with the cash grab that she can make off it,” said Samara Gill during a discussion about the controversy.
Gill also argued Meghan appears eager to retain the glamour and recognition connected to royal status despite no longer participating in official duties.
Palace frustration reportedly growing
Behind palace walls, frustration is allegedly building over how the Sussex brand continues to rely heavily on royal associations.
“There’s a belief among some people connected to the monarchy that Meghan wants all the glamour, symbolism and commercial power that comes with royal status without accepting the restrictions, obligations and scrutiny attached to royal duty itself,” said a royal insider quoted in recent reports.
Critics inside royal circles reportedly believe Meghan understands the Sussex connection remains central to her international celebrity profile and business value.
“Meghan Sussex” debate resurfaces
Attention has also returned to comments Meghan made during her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, where she corrected actress Mindy Kaling after being referred to as “Meghan Markle.”
During the exchange, Meghan emphasized that she now identifies as “Meghan Sussex,” a moment that quickly circulated online and divided audiences.
Supporters viewed the comment as harmless and personal, while critics argued it reinforced accusations that royal status still plays a central role in her public image.
Life far from Buckingham Palace
Meghan and Prince Harry now live in California alongside Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, continuing a life deliberately separated from formal royal responsibilities.
Even from thousands of miles away, however, debates surrounding titles, branding and royal identity appear far from disappearing anytime soon.
