Ukraine wants to end reliance on US tech — another country will make it possible

When a nation relies on a single partner for its survival, any delay in military supplies can cause widespread panic.

Leaders eventually start looking for backup options to keep their skies safe. A major European power is now stepping in to offer exactly that kind of lifeline.

A call for help

French President Emmanuel Macron recently picked up the phone to speak with his Ukrainian counterpart. The two leaders discussed a range of topics last Thursday, including global affairs and the journey toward joining the European Union.

But the most urgent issue was the safety of the sky. According to a Telegram statement from Volodymyr Zelensky cited by WP, the French leader offered immediate help to build a stronger defence shield.

The timing is critical. Russian forces continue to launch massive strikes against cities and key power stations. At the same time, local defenders are running out of American weapons to stop the incoming fire.

Seeking new options

Relying so heavily on the United States creates a dangerous bottleneck. The latest discussions show a clear push to find fresh suppliers and break that dependency.

Wirtualna Polska reports that the main European alternative is the SAMP/T air defence network. An upgraded version of this hardware matches the famous Patriot system, and the first unit should arrive later this year.

Officials are also looking further abroad to secure their borders. Negotiators are reportedly talking to two other nations, which experts believe to be Israel and South Korea, to secure similar heavy protection.

Building from scratch

Buying foreign equipment is only one half of the long term plan. Engineers are also trying to create a brand new domestic weapon called the Freya missile, leaning on the expertise of a developer known as Fire Point.

United24 notes this project will mix existing European parts with standard Western radar technology. To make it work, builders might use old knowledge from Soviet systems to track and destroy fast moving targets.

A local weapon promises to be much cheaper than buying top tier American rockets. More importantly, it gives the nation control over its own safety without having to beg distant allies to share their technology.
