Campaign trails are paved with good intentions and terrible slip-ups.
When a politician grabs the microphone, the easiest target is usually the person holding the highest office.
It gets incredibly awkward when the speaker is actually the second in command.
A massive blunder
Vice President JD Vance accidentally threw his own boss under the bus. He travelled to a Missouri factory on Monday to promote Republican goals ahead of the midterm elections.
Instead of firing up the crowd against his rivals, he ended up slamming the current administration. The massive own goal instantly caught fire online according to Daily Beast.
He told the audience he did not expect them to agree with his team on every single issue. “I’m not going to ask you to agree with us on every issue, because that would be impossible,” Vance said.
Forgetting who is in charge
Then he asked the crowd to protect local jobs and rebuild the national dream.
“What I will ask you is if you want to make America great, if you want to protect your jobs and hopefully build jobs in this beautiful factory, if you want to make our streets even safer, if you want to rebuild the American dream for the next generation, vote against the crazy leadership in Washington, D.C.,” Vance declared.
The vice president paused while people clapped. He then quickly tried to backtrack and fix his mistake.
“Vote against the congressional leadership that will stand up and say ‘we care more about illegal aliens than we do American citizens,’ and vote for the leaders in Congress who have promised they are going to fight for you,” he clarified.
Mockery and harsh words
The internet refused to let it go. According to The Daily Beast, political opponents rushed to mock the bizarre misstep.
The official Democratic account on the X platform quickly highlighted the mistake. They posted the video clip next to a photo of Donald Trump and his top allies at the White House.
Later in the factory speech, the vice president shifted gears to loudly condemn financial crimes. “Look, there’s a simple principle that I have, which is, if you are committing fraud against the American people, you ought to go to prison,” Vance stated.
Pointing fingers
That stern comment drew immediate fire from Pete Buttigieg.
“You could start by walking down the hall,” the former transportation secretary posted online.
“See why your boss keeps pardoning people convicted of money laundering, wire fraud, tax evasion, and securities fraud,” he added.
