Many smartphone users switch on Do Not Disturb mode to silence calls, messages and notifications during meetings or while sleeping.

But according to BGR, another setting has a much bigger impact on battery life — and most people only associate it with flying.

More than flights

Airplane mode was originally designed to disable wireless signals during air travel to prevent interference with aircraft systems.

Today, the feature is commonly used outside airports as a quick way to reduce battery drain or reset weak mobile signals.

When activated, Airplane mode shuts down major communication hardware including cellular connections, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

That instantly reduces power consumption because the phone stops constantly searching for networks and maintaining connections.

Why battery drops

Mobile connectivity is one of the biggest battery drains on modern smartphones.

According to BGR, the effect becomes even worse in areas with weak reception because phones continuously work harder to maintain signal strength.

Airplane mode prevents that constant background activity entirely by disabling the cellular modem.

Users can still manually reactivate Wi-Fi or Bluetooth afterward if needed while keeping mobile network usage disabled.

Do Not Disturb differs

Do Not Disturb mode works very differently despite often being used for similar situations.

Instead of shutting down connectivity, it mainly blocks sounds, vibrations and visual alerts from incoming notifications.

That means apps, Wi-Fi connections and mobile data services continue running normally in the background.

The screen may wake less frequently and the vibration motor gets used less often, but overall battery savings remain limited.

Small versus large savings

BGR noted that Do Not Disturb can still slightly improve battery life because fewer alerts trigger the phone’s hardware.

However, most of the heavy power usage still comes from background connectivity and data activity.

That is why Airplane mode consistently delivers far larger battery savings, especially during travel, overnight charging breaks or poor signal conditions.

For users trying to stretch battery life as long as possible, turning off wireless communication remains far more effective than simply silencing notifications.
